Blue Security anti-spam community target of large-scale spam attack

Tuesday, May 2, 2006

Beginning Monday morning, many BlueFrog and Blue Security users began receiving an email warning them that if they did not remove their email addresses from the Blue Security registry, they would begin to receive huge amounts of unsolicited email. As quickly as four hours after the initial warning message, some users began to receive an unprecedented amount of spam. Most of the messages were simply useless text. Users reported that Blue Security’s website was unavailable or extremely slow in responding.

Blue Security is an online community dedicated to fighting spam. As they became more popular, their member list increased substantially. The members’ email address is encrypted and added to a list of e-mail addresses that wish to stop receiving spam. Blue Security maintains the encrypted list, which uses an encrypted hash function. Spammers are encouraged to remove all addressed from their email list that are also in Blue Security’s Do Not Intrude Registry by using free compliance tools available at Blue Security’s web site.

According to Blue Security’s web site, “A major spammer had started spamming our members with discouraging messages in an attempt to demoralize our community. This spammer is using mailing lists he already owns that may contain addresses of some community members.” Reportedly, Blue Security has received complaints from users about spam allegedly sent from Blue Security promoting their anti-spam solution and web site.

Blue Security states they are “an anti-spam company determined to fight spam and as such never has and never will send unsolicited email.” There are also reports of non-users of BlueSecurity/BlueFrog receiving the warning emails, which now seems is also being sent to email addresses of people who have never added their email address to Blue Security’s Do Not Intrude Registry.

California governor signs new state budget, eligible Californians to get stimulus payments

Thursday, July 15, 2021

On Monday night, governor of the U.S. state of California Gavin Newsom signed a new US$262.6 billion budget bill for the state into law, with US$8.1 billion reserved for US$600 direct stimulus payments to Californians to aid in California’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill for the budget, SB 129, and the bill for the stimulus payments, SB 139, both passed both houses of the California Legislature for this fiscial year.

The payments, dubbed the Golden State Stimulus II, are set to be paid out to eligible California taxpaying residents beginning in September. To be eligible, residents must have filed a state tax return for last year, not be someone’s dependent, and must have earned no more than US$75 thousand in wages last year.

Eligible Californians would get a one-time payment of US$600, and households with dependents would receive an additional US$500. Around two-thirds of Californians are expected to get a stimulus payment, according to the governor’s office. Newsom initially proposed the payments in May to aid the state’s economic recovery, as part of his “California Comeback Plan”.

Californians who already received a stimulus payment earlier in the year are not eligible for this second payment. An additional payment of US$500 is still available for those who claimed dependents on their returns.

The budget also provides for US$5.2 billion in renters’ aid for low-income residents and landlords, which would pay for all rent left unpaid during the COVID-19 crisis, and cover rent for several coming months. Overdue water and utility payments would also be covered by US$2 billion in funding.

An additional US$1.5 billion was for grant money intended for small businesses, with US$120 million in tax credits for businesses willing to relocate to California.

California had a budget surplus of nearly US$76 billion during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In signing SB 129, Newsom line-item vetoed Section 19.55 of the bill concerning US$2.58 billion in appropriations to various funds “on a technical basis”, citing in an explanation appropriations covered under the section were superseded by the budget. In California, a governor may approve a bill passed by the Legislature with specific items related to the budget rejected. The Legislature can override this line-item veto with a two-thirds vote of both the Assembly and the Senate.

Things You Should Know About Health Care Assistant Jobs

According to a report, the population aged over 50 is predicted to rise to 38.6% in England by 2029. So whether you are looking for health care assistant jobs in Exeter or other cities of the country, you will find huge openings. It’s a great opportunity to dedicate your service to others and make a real difference in their lives.

Though the demand for health care assistants will increase in the future, the selection won’t be easy. Every healthcare institution will look for the best candidate so that the aged patients, either suffering from a disease or not, get good care. So you shouldn’t stay relaxed even if there are many vacancies for care assistants.

What will be your role as a health care assistant?

As a health care assistant, you will provide and support patients with their personal care such as washing, dressing, and toileting. Sometimes, you might also assist them with eating and drinking. Your patient will be entirely dependent on you for his daily chores.

Your primary objective would be to provide and maintain your patients in an acceptable level of comfort and dignity until they are in your care or you are employed for them. Other than this, you need to keep your seniors informed about any changes and concerns about your patients.

Skills and traits required for the post of a health care assistant

Most importantly, you need a caring nature for the job so that you can understand others’ pain and serve them well. If you are not that caring, you will consider this post as a burden and it will be difficult for you to excel. You should know to treat your patients with compassion and dignity.

Besides, you should have good communication skills. It’s because the health care assistant’s job is all about communication. If you cannot communicate well, you cannot keep your words before the patients. There will be a huge communication gap between you and your patient and the result of the service will not show great results. Also, the patient will not be comfortable staying under your care.

If you are a parent, no one can beat you in health care assistant jobs. After taking care of children and senior family members, you automatically develop skills for this post. Other than this, the experience of customer service or retail will be an added advantage.

Qualification and experience required for the post of a health care assistant

Like other healthcare jobs, there are no basic entry qualifications required to become a health care assistant. You should only know a good level of English because it is a common language used for communication and other formalities.

Talking about the experience, you shouldn’t fear if you are a fresher in the industry or for the job. It’s because you will receive all the required training in your initial induction.

You will be required to undertake the Care Certificate, which is a work-based training program to train new care workers in the skills they will need to perform the role. It was introduced in 2015 to ensure all care staff has a standardized approach to their training.

Qualification and experience do not matter in health care assistant jobs if you have a love for others and a passion to help them in their difficult times. If you consider yourself ideal for the post, apply now.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

New Zealand school children put fight videos on YouTube

Friday, October 27, 2006

Approximately seven videos showing school children beating their peers have been put on the Google-owned video service, YouTube.

The videos are recorded using cellphone cameras from students at Auckland Grammar School, Tauranga Boys’ College and Saint Kentigern College and other unidentified schools, according to New Zealand newspaper, The Press.

Auckland Grammar has three videos of bullying and Tauranga Boys College and St Kentigern College both have one video each.

According to The Press one video filmed in Auckland Grammar shows two students, surrounded by a large circle of boys, knock another boy unconscious. The boy appears to have convulsions. The clip was put on YouTube by I0pex a month ago and was titled “Some guy getting KNocked the fuck out.” It had a rating of four and a half stars out of a possible five.

The video was not accessible on YouTube by 27 October, 2006 at 7.36 a.m. UTC, a notice displayed said, “This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.” The Press said an unidentified clip shows two girls fighting, which was also removed for the same reason.

YouTube guidelines state: “Real violence is not allowed. If your video shows someone getting hurt, attacked or humiliated, don’t post it.”

According to NewsRoom the video showing the bullying from Tauranga Boys’ College shows three students, one student holding another while being punched on the ground in the face. When a teacher breaks up the fight, the comments for the video criticise the teacher for doing so.

One other video shows one Asian student bullying another Asian, according to The Press.

Annabel Taylor, Family Help Trust chairwoman, said: “The clips represented the worst aspects of bullying. It is premeditated, organised, intentional, choreographed even, and that’s what distinguishes it from common schoolyard bullying.”

Tauranga Boys’ College deputy principal, Robert Naumann, said: “While appropriate disciplinary action was taken against the boys involved in the incident, and none of those filmed had given their permission for the footage to be posted on the web, the film has remained within the public domain despite attempts by college staff to have it removed,” he said, “Youtube has continued to support its placement”. The video was not accessible on 27 October, 2006 at 7.36 a.m. UTC. Graham Young, principal of Tauranga Boys’ College, said: “A video posted on the Internet showing two of his students fighting is inappropriate and bizarre, but not unusual. Unfortunately technology allows teenagers to put all sorts of material about each other on websites.”

Martin Crocker, Netsafe director, said that while posting the videos did not break any law, the actions filmed in the videos did. “The terrible thing is that the aim of online notoriety is driving people to do quite extreme things,” Crocker said.

Dave Turnbull, principal of Cashmere High School, said that he is unaware of anything like that has happened in Christchurch. “The reality is it could have been any school.”

According to Paul Shamy from Stopping Violence Services Christchurch, “[I am] not surprised that the violence was in well-to-do schools such as Auckland Grammar as violence is spread throughout society.”

Communicating Effectively At Work A Study By Artur Victoria

Submitted by: Artur Victoria

The two basic communications systems are oral and written. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Most managers are normally exposed to a heavy dose of written communication from their bosses and peers; and as a consequence, they tend to view written communication as the way of communicating. Additionally, writing serves as a record of what has been said and done-a factor more liable to be a concern in a larger organization.

It is likely that modern business organizations rely too heavily upon written communication. Face-to-face communication involves talking with another person or persons; written media involve talking at another person. While warmth and enthusiasm can be achieved in written media, there can be no match in rapport and understanding for face-to-face discussion by two people.

The advantages of written media are that they can be disseminated at a number of locations at once, can handle more complex subjects, can reach large numbers of people faster, and build a record for later reference.

The following discussions of potential media are only outlines. No attempt is made to provide a how-to kit. Rather, the discussions are meant to provide an array of media possibilities, including their strengths and weaknesses. The practitioner hopefully can select those media most appropriate for his specific circumstances. Caution and simplicity are recommended. When building a communications effort from scratch or revising a current one to improve effectiveness, it is better to start small and expand later. One or two types of communication carried out reasonably well are more helpful than several types carried out poorly or in a half-hearted manner. The proper role of employee communications must be kept in mind-that is, to improve employee and organization effectiveness, not to entertain the audience, or improve morale, or enhance the self-esteem of management. Managers need to be trained to listen and react, not just order and talk.

Manager talks to mass audiences. Talks to large audiences have great impact on employees.

– Depending on circumstances, they can be difficult to arrange and expensive in terms of employee time.

– Speech giving is quite difficult for some managers. The quality of both delivery and content of such talks can vary greatly. A rule of thumb is that no more than three topics should be covered in one talk. It is possible to improve talks with rehearsals and constructive criticism solicited from peers or a pilot group.

– Manager talks should, on the one hand, be used sparingly, only for important topics, since they have high impact. On the other hand, they should be given occasionally, even if only for a state-of-the business review, in order that they be seen as a normal activity.

– Even when feasible, allowing questions from the floor is not normally advisable due to the difficulty of keeping them on the subject and of being properly prepared to answer them.

– Use of visuals is optional. They may enhance employee understanding and retention but they take time to prepare properly. Visuals are especially helpful for complex subjects.

– Suitable audience facilities (space, heat, ventilation, etc.) should be maintained.

Manager or supervisor talks to small groups –Small-group talks can be either talking to or talking with employees.

– Talks are generally more effective where there are question-answer or give-and-take discussions. While for most managers not as unnerving as mass meetings, small group talks are still difficult for some people.

– Talks can be greatly improved by preparation and rehearsal.

– Talks should have an objective-that is, they should explain a change, gather employee ideas on a subject, discuss a problem and alternative solutions, quiet a rumor, etc.

– Note taking is necessary when soliciting employee views or reactions.

– If a response to employee comments is deemed desirable, employees should be informed of a plan for any follow-up.

– Faking answers to audience questions is unacceptable. It is best to admit ignorance and promise to obtain answers.

-A group decision stemming from a talk is unacceptable unless such decision is the objective of the talk. There is nothing wrong with accepting, without a commitment, recommendations and ideas stemming from discussions following talks.

– An explanation of the reason for the talk, its format, and the planned length is needed at the start of the meeting. The speaker should quit early if his objective is achieved early rather than drag out the meeting. Visual aids can be helpful depending on the content of the talk. They should be large enough to be seen.

-Audience facilities are important. Crowding, noise, etc., are disrupting factors. Informality is best.

Small-group decision making

– Group decision making is a valuable way to get commitment of a group to a plan of action.

– The subject can run the gamut from a simple, timely, operational need to a complex, long-term problem.

– The supervisor-manager needs to be trained in the decision-making process.

– Management must be committed to following through on the decision, or group decisions quickly become academic exercises or an employee disturbance.

– While group decision making is a valuable team tool for business effectiveness, if overused, it can be time consuming and counterproductive. Use it sparingly, and only for important decisions.

– The management styles of some organizations preclude group decision making. Supervisors are uncomfortable with the process, and view it as allowing too much employee participation.

– Where management feels comfortable with the process, however, it can vastly increase unit effectiveness.

– While staff specialists can run group meetings, it is better if the immediate supervisor runs them himself. If he does not run the meeting, he should at least be present.

Grievance handling. A supervisor should not look upon a grievance as a challenge to his authority but as a chance to listen to and to solve an employee problem or concern. But he will not be inclined to do so unless management has a similar view of grievances.

– A grievance provides a valuable test of any organization communications system. It poses a number of questions. First, can an employee get a hearing? Secondly, has any sort of grievance procedure been established with levels of appeal? Thirdly, is there a mechanism for making widely applicable results known to supervisors and employees?

– Wherever possible, the grievance procedure should form an integral part of the employee communications system. It should be a means of improving job effectiveness rather than an adversary procedure.

– The most successful grievance handling occurs when the grievance is resolved between the first-line supervisor and the employee.

– Training of the first-line supervisor in the principles and techniques of grievance handling through role playing is valuable preparation for the real experience.

– Use actual grievances and their resolutions as the basis for supervisory discussion and training. Have supervisors discuss controversial and unique cases with all their employees.

– Publish noteworthy grievances in bulletins, newsletters, or other written media where they can inform or assist supervisors and employees.

– Do not be defensive. Make the grievance procedure work for management by openly acknowledging errors and correcting them, by exhibiting efforts toward fair and equitable settlements, by applying lessons learned.

– Wherever possible, allow the supervisor either to reveal the nature of the settlement to the employee or be a part, in some other way, of the settlement process. Don’t let the supervisor construe being over ruled as a loss of face, or a black mark. Help him learn by discussion and example, and give him management support.

Face-to-face communications -Sometimes called one-on-one or belly-to-belly communication, face to-face communication is probably the most meaningful form of employee communication.

– Help the supervisor carry out his communications role by asking him to explain certain policy and procedure items. Require that the supervisor ask employees for certain job information and their reactions to policies and /or procedures affecting their jobs.

– Give the supervisor training in self-expression 10 and in listening. Don’t try to mold supervisors into a fixed style. Let them be natural and use their own styles in dealing with employees. But see to it they have the training and support to handle employee contacts themselves and handle them well.

– Instruct supervisors to identify natural employee leaders and to help these employees, through exchange of opinions, understand key policies and procedures related to their jobs. Be straightforward, though, and avoid manipulation.

– Use different persons as sources for employee opinion to avoid getting a limited point of view. With the knowledge of supervisors, conduct employee surveys to determine how well supervisors are carrying out their communications responsibilities.

– Advise supervisors of things which should be passed on to employees, always mindful that they cannot pass information on unless they know and understand it themselves.

– Be sure that the supervisor’s job assignments allow him sufficient time to do his employee-communications job adequately.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

Belgian bus company knows solution for car parking problems

Monday, May 21, 2007

Do you have a hard time finding a parking space? Take the bus or tram if you go to the city. That’s the message Belgian bus company De Lijn (The Line) is sending to promote public transport as a solution for car parking problems. As a part of their media campaign, they have jokingly suggested that people use the top of the busses as parking space.

Another idea they are using in their media campaign: maybe you could park your car on the bottom of a canal? The bus company is using an invented diving company called Cardive, which has divers that offer to dump your car in the canal. The divers walk around in cities and hand out free bus tickets and maps of the bus network.

To reach car drivers who are not using public transport, the media campaign has several radio commercials that present other solutions to the car parking problem. You could use “asphalt-spray” to camouflage your car, making it invisible for policemen (although you then need to remember where you’ve parked). Or you could use the “flat tire kit”, which comes with a fake flat tire and an inflatable dummy, so it looks like you’re replacing your flat tire. The final idea the bus company has is to use a View-Master to fool parking guards into believing that your car has been stationed correctly.

A survey among 4000 customers of De Lijn shows that two out of three car owners who use public transport, do so to avoid parking space troubles, and in cities this percentage rises to 90%. The survey further shows that 39% use the bus to go shopping.

During the month of May, the auto-bus and the divers tour several cities in Flanders (Leuven, Hasselt, Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp).

Telephone network access on iPhone unlocked by teen

Friday, August 24, 2007

George Hotz, 17, confirmed on Friday that he has cracked the lock that joins the Apple iPhone to AT&T‘s wireless network and was using it on T-Mobile‘s network—the only other major U.S. carrier compatible with iPhone technology. This crack opens up the phone, which is only being sold in the U.S., to use on overseas networks. “That’s the big thing,” said Hotz.

Hotz posted the complicated hack, which requires skill with both soldering and software and takes about two hours to perform, to his blog Thursday. He collaborated over the Internet with four other people, including two Russians, to develop the unlocking process that leaves all iPhone functions intact, with the exception of the “visual voicemail” feature.

With the hack available to the public, there is the possibility that some will buy U.S. iPhones, unlock them and send them overseas for profit. “That’s exactly […] what I don’t want,” Hotz said. “I don’t want people making money off this.”

Hotz said he wished he could have made the instructions so that users could modify the phones themselves. “But that’s the simplest I could make them.”

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said the company has “no comment” and referred questions to Apple.

A second phone, which was also hacked by Hotz, was placed for sale on eBay. He states at the auction site “Soon, you will be able to buy unlocked iPhones everywhere, in fact probably before this auction ends. But this is the one that started it all. The one unlocked while the steps were posted live on the blog. This isn’t just an unlocked iPhone, this is a piece of history.” Starting at $540, bids reached $99,999,999, although many bids were canceled as fraudulent. Before their removal, Hotz commented on the excessive bids, stating “I’m sure these most recent bids are fake.” The auction was canceled early by Hotz due to “an error in the listing”.
