Postal suspension lifted in Hamilton, New Zealand

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

The two-day postal delivery suspension placed on three streets in Hamilton, New Zealand has been lifted by New Zealand Post and the posties are back to work delivering mail.

The suspension of deliveries applied to Tennyson Road, Dryden Road, and Emerson Place, which are located in Fairfield. New Zealand Post came to the decision on Friday to put the ban in place because of recent gang violence/conflict. Along with the New Zealand Police, New Zealand Post reviewed the current situation, and also drove along the streets, they came to the conclusion that the situation has now “cooled down,” according to New Zealand Post spokesperson, Fiona Mayo and postal delivery general manger, Matthew Nant.

The residents on those streets came out to greet the postie, who was accompanied by business leader Brendon Coker, as she delivered the residents mail. Martha Rollo, Tennyson Road resident for 13-years, said that she was thrilled that her mail was once again being delivered after the “senseless” gang violence had temporarily stopped post. “Why should the rest of the locals suffer because of the gangs. We don’t need this hassle.” Ms Rollo said that the gang activity has only recently happened.

Vicky Roughan and Kevin Roughan, 12-year residents of Dryden Road, said that the post suspension, vandalism, and gang activity has been a problem for them. Mr Roughan claims that children from the age of nine and up are drinking late at night. “You don’t know what the hell’s going to happen.”

Mr Nant has apologised to the affected, inconvenienced residents.

New Zealand Post state they are going to continue to monitor the situation, however and also have on-going discussion with the local council and police “to make sure we’re abreast of any developments in the area.”

The gang violence/activity New Zealand Post are referring to is, on the previous Thursday the Armed Offenders Squad was called out where they raided three homes following a shooting, eight people were arrested, and a large number of firearms were seized.

Despite post not being delivered, newspapers were still being delivered, waste collection was still happening, and electricity meter readers were also going around house to house, checking the meters.

M?ori Party co-leader, Doctor Pita Sharples, has said that gangs are again starting to imping on on society like in the 1970s. He says we should include gangs into society, instead of disrupting them.

Wikinews previously reported on a letterbox for sale on New Zealand internet auction site, TradeMe, which has now reached a bid of $26.03 by Eliz “polysstew”.

Scams Of Online Car Loans You Should Be Aware Of

By Canada’s Car Loans

With banks increasing their web presence to reach the most elusive of their clientage it has become very easy to obtain online car loans. Not only are they hassle free and don’t require a lot of frustration on your part but for a rational borrower it is imperative that he should be aware of possible scams that are online.

One of the benefits of the online car loans is that you have access to an array of websites that you can easily compare and evaluate. But nevertheless a prospective buyer can get ensnared by some of the scams online and it is helpful if they know some common features of these scams to effectively reduce the chances of getting into a fraudulent loan scheme.

1. The Guaranteed Loans Scam

This is one of the oldest scams in the book. This scam may be old but is as effective as any and has resulted in many borrowers getting loans with highly inflated rates. This con makes people believe that their options have become limited and their salvation lies only in these loans. Always verify the details and conditions of online car loans that have sweeping generalized statements.

2. The Up-Front Fees Scam

This is another famous online car loans scam where you are asked to deposit the fees up front. Sadly many people pay this money without the lender ever dispatching the loans. It is true that a lender can ask you for an application fee when you are applying but never pay actual installment before your application has been approved or you are sure about the authenticity of the operations of the bank.

3. The Low-Credit Score Scam

This is the car loan where the lender will tell its gullible borrowers that their credit score is more damaged than what they perceive it is. This means that they can offer you loans with higher interest payment. You will not object but in fact will be grateful to the lender. This makes it imperative that you check your credit reports or have them checked by an independent third party.

4. The Required Co-Signer Scam

Another unique scam is the one in which the lender will ask you to get a cosigner. You can only improve your credit rating if the loan is on your name and you make the payments on time. This means when you have a cosigner these lenders will issue loans in their name hence leaving your credit rating undeterred. Try to get your online car loans always in your and the cosigner name unless you have bad credit already.

5. The Changing the Terms Scam

As the name suggests this scam works when you are facing a situation with all the terms and clauses of the contract of the online car loans changed. What actually happens is that once you get your loan approved and may even get a car, you will be notified by your lender that since your credit rating is considerably low you will have to agree to new terms and conditions. These conditions will be harsh with more strict conditions. The best remedy for this scam is to return the car as soon as possible and try to find another lender.

Early morning fire kills four New York group home residents

Sunday, March 22, 2009

After an early morning fire began, four out of the nine people living at the Riverview Individual Residential Alternative group home located in Wells, New York were killed by the blaze. The Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office, which supervises the home, told the media that the fire started at approximately 5:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time. Two staff members were at the home at the time, who safely evacuated four of the five survivors.

The names of the residents killed in the fire were not able to be released due to New York’s Mental Hygiene Law, but are able to be identified as two adult men, aged 32 and 52, and two adult women, aged 43 and 60. A 71-year-old male was injured in the fire, and was taken to a hospital in Utica, a nearby city. The other four residents have been relocated to an unnamed group home. Both staff members are also being examined at the hospital.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and friends of the four victims and to continue to pray for the full recovery of those five people and two staff members who survived this incident. I also want to express my thanks and appreciation for the first responders and volunteers who worked swiftly and diligently to respond to this tragedy,” David Patterson, the governor of New York, said to the media.

The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined. However, the New York Civil Liberties Union stated that “the blaze appears to have been an electrical fire and the sprinkler system was knocked out immediately.” They also called for “an immediate investigation into the causes of and contributing factors of the fire.”

The New York State Department of State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is currently investigating the causes of the blaze, with help from New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the New York State Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.

Wikinews interviews U.S. Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney

Friday, March 7, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Cynthia McKinney, one of the candidates for the Green Party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

McKinney is a former Democratic Congresswoman from Georgia. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and held her seat for ten years until being defeated by Denise Majette in 2002. She was the first ever African American woman from her state to be elected to Congress.

We asked her why she made the recent switch to the Green Party. She replied, “Due to the importance of environmental issues, Green issues are the issues of today. The Ten Key Values ofthe Green Party stress us getting along with each other in harmony with the planet that gives us life.”

When asked about how she would handle Iraq she replied, “I would instruct the Joint Chiefs to draw up a plan for the orderly withdrawal of all U.S. troops from the country. I would dismantle our military bases in the area, and I would also demand that U.S. andother international corporations relinquish any claims to Iraqi oil orother resources and withdraw as well.”

McKinney is running for president because, basically, she thinks that “it’s time that the people win”.

Canada’s west coast battles high winds

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Currently, there are blackouts, heavy rain, and high winds in British Columbia. Over 220,000 BC Hydro customers have no power. Buildings have already collapsed and trees have been knowed down. Five Vancouver rivers were in danger of flooding, which rain fell at 10 mm an hour for more than six hours at midday.

The steel frame of a four-storey building under construction in Vancouver collapsed. Construction workers escaped injury, luckily they were on a coffee break at the time of the incident. The steel frame crushed cars in a parking lot and missed a truck driver.

Citizens had to evacuate a subdivision of 30 homes. The winds smashed trees into houses in West Vancouver.

“We have some real fears here with electrical problems,” said Captain Rob Jones Cook of the Vancouver Fire Department. “This is impinging on electrical poles and lamp standards. We also have hydro bus lines running down two sides of the building.” The Vancouver Fire Department says they have no idea as to why the building collapsed.

Winds are gusting at more than 100 kilometres an hour (62 mph) in some areas and rainfall amounts of 50 to 130 millimetres.

According BC Hydro spokeswoman Elisha Moreno, the hardest-hit areas are Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Mission, B.C. “We’re trying to be optimistic and hoping it’s by end of day today, but there may very well be customers that are into the early-morning hours before restoration,” Moreno said.

Extensive ferry cancellations, road closures, and massive power outages are in effect until the storm ends.

The RCMP have advised people to stay home and off the highway.

The same heavy weather has also affected nearby Washington State, USA.

Viacom delays launch of gay cable channel

Friday, January 14, 2005

New York —Media giant Viacom has delayed the launch of its LGBT-themed LOGO channel by more than four months, according to reports. Originally scheduled to launch Feb. 17, the new channel’s debut was delayed until a planned June 30 sign on.

Part of Viacom’s MTV Networks, LOGO has secured carriage on Time Warner cable in Manhattan, RCN and Atlantic Broadband. It is in final negotiations with Comcast, the nation’s largest cable company, which serves the San Francisco Bay Area.

The channel’s management said it will take the extra time to beef up its programming slate and sign on more carriers. LOGO already has secured the rights to such programming as Golden Globe and Emmy-winning Angels in America and films such as Far From Heaven, Philadelphia and The Birdcage.

Original programming includes plans for a string of reality-based series and documentaries with titles such as The Relationship Show, My Fabulous Gay Wedding, and Cruise, which take place about a gay-themed ocean cruise ship.
