Wikinews interviews India’s first female Paralympic medalist Deepa Malik

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Wikinews on Sunday interviewed Deepa Malik, India’s first female Paralympic medalist, who won the silver medal in the Women’s Shot Put F53 event finals, at the 2016 Summer Paralympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Malik lost the gold medal to Bahrain’s Fatema Nedham, who had the best throw 4.76 metres, setting a new regional record in paralympic women’s shot put.

Arriving in Rio, Malik had initial trouble due to the airline losing her luggage; it didn’t all arrive until three days later: clothes, opening ceremony outfit and equipment including competition belts.

In early August there was a possibly that Malik might lose her spot on the Indian team going to Rio, with fellow female para athlete Karam Jyoti challenging Malik’s selection and the Sport’s Authority of Indian’s selection process at the High Court of Delhi. The high court ruled against the plaintiff.

Both of these events occurred against the wider backdrop of the Paralympic Committee of India being suspended by the International Paralympic Committee. The Sports Authority of India took final authority over the Paralympic Committee of India for sending a team to Rio, with agreement from the International Paralympic Committee; this arrangement allowed India to compete under their own flag at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

((Wikinews)) Congratulations on your result.

Deepa Malik: Thank you so much.

((WN)) Even though you are currently waiting in terms of the end result of the protest.

DM: Absolutely, but I’m happy with my performance, I’m happy that I could improve and I could prove myself, there were a lot of questions back home on my selection and on my hard work. My single-minded focus that I had put into this journey of being a Paralympian. Well, I am just so anxious about the results.

((WN)) So how much did the court case and KLM losing your luggage impact on your preparations and your result today?

DM: Yes, but I’m happy that my husband was my coach here, and, so, I had huge moral support in terms of keeping my mind and everything in peace. Most of the equipment was available in the gym, we had to alter the training a bit like the throw days couldn’t happen, so we instead exercised. No, I think that is what sports teaches you, you can’t live on excuses, I never lived on excuses.

((WN)) You work around things.

DM: Yes, that’s what we do, that’s what a sportsman is suppose to do, rise again, and then fall and rise, and run, and I did exactly that.

((WN)) What message should other Indian women take away from your participation and result in Rio?

DM: This is going to be the first female medal that India would have ever won in Paralympics and as it is I’m working aggressively towards transforming this entire concept of empowerment for the women, especially the women in disabilities in my country. So I’m really happy that this medal give my voice more value, more strength, and I’ll be able to impact even more, though on the ninth of September the Prime Minister’s jury has awarded me with the award of Women Transforming India, I’m so happy that within three days of getting that award, I have added another feather to it and proved that yes this journey of ability beyond disability. And not just disability, this is a universal message that if women put their minds to their dreams they can balance it; age, gender, disability, is all a state of mind. If you put your passion and hard work, you can get it, and in the Indian scenario were they say infrastructure is a challenge, women participation that are taboo, religiously and psychologically, disabilities taken as a curse, dependability[?] increases because of lack of infrastructure, well, time to get rid of the excuses. We have to start erasing the excuses and believe your own self and that’s the message I’m carrying with all the activities that I do whether it is car rallying, motorbiking or swimming across a river, every record or every unique activity that I’ve undertaken and just below paralysis has been aimed at changing the stereotypical image of a women and also a women in disability. ?

((WN)) Will you and your daughter both be trying to represent India at the 2020 Games in Tokyo?

DM: I’m very sure about myself, but my daughter, though, she’s a Paralympian, yes, which again was considered a huge taboo in my society that oh my god both the mother and the daughter both have a physical disability, what is going to happen to these two, but we did good and she is working as a youth council representative in the Commonwealth countries, for the Paralympics specially, and her work though her foundation called Wheeling Happiness has earned her the young leader award from the Queen of England, so I guess her focus is now shifting to more on community service and empowering others and not just herself. And she is leaving on first of October to Loughborough to do her PhD doctorate programme in disability sports psychology, I’m very sure Loughborough is going to give her a huge amount of sports [inaudible] but how much time she going to decide to devote to sports and studies is her decision entirely. That’s her dream, her journey.

((WN)) How helpful was the Sports Authority of India in preparing and supporting your Rio ambitions??

DM: I think 100 per cent, because the biggest challenge we have back home is a customised training, or the infrastructure for that matter, so we were given the ability and the funds to train the way we wanted to train, and the funds were huge which were given to us, out accommodation, food, diet, physical therapist, psychologist, trainer, gym, everything was paid for, and customised, you want it and they give it. So I guess this was easy financially this time, because every expenses was taken care of, my husband could also take a sabbatical from his job and join my journey, and having him twenty-four seven and coaching me because he himself is an athlete, and have the best diet and counselling. I think it’s worked wonders, so I give shout out and a huge applaud.

((WN)) How important was it for you to have a carer in Rio?

DM: Yes, again we really have to appreciate the sports authority of India and also Paralympic Committee of India, which is going to start to function post-Rio in India. They were very very quick, they were very very adamant in giving the wheelchair people escorts. And I need help twenty four seven, I’m just below paralysed so it was really huge, emotionally, mentally, psychically training-wise, every way I think the situation was perfect.

((WN)) Thank you for your time.

DM: Thank you.

News services and web companies increase Farsi services in light of Iranian political situation

Friday, June 19, 2009

Several organizations have increased their Farsi services in the wake of the events surrounding the recent presidential election. Google has added Farsi-to-English translation as one of its translation options to its Google Translate service. Similarly, Facebook has launched a Farsi version of its web site. The BBC has increased the number of broadcasting satellites that it uses for its Farsi news channel, BBC Persian Television.

Google’s translation services currently only provide translation from Farsi to English. Franz-Josef Och stated that this was to enable people in Iran to communicate directly via the Internet with the outside world, saying “Like YouTube and other services, Google Translate is one more tool that Persian speakers can use to communicate directly to the world, and vice versa — increasing everyone’s access to information.”. The company states that it is working to provide translation between Farsi and the other 40 languages that it provides on its Translate service.

Facebook’s Farsi version of its web site, which is still marked as a beta-test version, was launched rapidly, with, the company states, the assistance of more than 400 Farsi speakers who submitted translations of the contents of the site.

Both companies state that their reasons for expanding their services are to promote communication, and are not politically motivated.

The BBC has increased the number of broadcasting satellites that it uses for broadcasting its Farsi news channel. This is, it states, in response to signal jamming of its broadcasts by the Iranian government. (The Iranian government accuses BBC Persian Television, which is funded by the British Foreign Office, of being a propaganda service for the British Government.) It states that its broadcasts on the Hot Bird 6 satellite had been aggressively jammed, and that therefore it was now also broadcasting from the Eutelsat W2M satellite, and planned to start broadcasting from Nilesat as well in the near future.

Understanding The Acfi (Aged Care Funding Instrument) In Australia}

Submitted by: Drew Dwyer

The Aged Care Funding Instrument, known in the industry as ACFI, is the primary mechanism available to fund the core care needs of accredited aged care facilities.

While based on the different resource requirements of individual persons, the ACFI is primarily intended to deliver funding to the financial entity or facility providing the care.

The ACFI consists of 12 questions about assessed care needs, each having four ratings (A, B, C or D) and two diagnostic sections.

It proceeds as a 5-step process for funding approval.

Step 1: Assessment

Step 2: Checklist

Step 3: Rating A to D

Step 4: Submissions

Step 5: Record keeping

A best practice guideline for any nursing home is that they should conduct a sequence of scheduled assessments on a resident that culminates in a formal case conference, which includes the resident and/or their loved ones, where their care is discussed. The case conference ends with a care plan being written, which is then reviewed by the RN in charge of the care with their team every three months. ACFI funding is then the result of consultation and allocation of resources. Good clinical leadership is necessary in order to gather evidence of the residents needs, conduct case conferences, write care plans, and maintain the review process.

Recently there have been articles suggesting fraud and incorrect allocations of funds within an ACFI application. Whilst it would be rare that there is a false claim, more often than not facilities are not claiming enough of the funds available. It is essential that facilities apply for the ACFI correctly, because if facilities are not claiming the appropriate funding for clients the whole facility suffers. A domino effect occurs and resources that should be used for wages, services and equipment are not available, leading to further pressure on facility staff.

One question here is should families know about the allocations of funding to which their family member is entitled? The ACFI tools and system are designed for the service providers to validate the resources they use to care for the resident. It is not something that is shared with the representative/family. Many operators are not entirely clear on whats available for their facility or even how to apply until the full assessments and validation of a residents condition takes place.

The ACFI is a complicated and confusing system of resource allocation, even for facility staff, and it only adds further confusion by including the input of families/representatives. It is simply a process that they dont need to be involved with unless there are unmet needs that will have to be paid for by the resident or family. To avoid this situation, staff that are dealing with ACFI applications must ensure that the application process has been completed correctly to gain all the funding for resources available.

Applying and understanding ACFI can be a challenge for facility managers and ACFI officers, especially as the Federal Government continue to make changes to the funding increments. Frontline Care Solutions we will help you unravel the mystery of the application and help you ensure you claim those much needed extra resources. Our Understanding and Implementing Your ACFI seminar is run in all capital cities throughout the year which is a must for all ACFI Officers, CNCs and Facility Managers.

Wikipedia victim of onslaught of April Fool’s jokes

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Friday, April 1, 2005

Today Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone with access to the Internet can edit, was the victim of an onslaught of practical jokes, as April Fool’s Day kicked in various timezones around the world, at least those parts which follow the Gregorian calendar. It is believed that Wikipedia contributors were kept busy tidying up and removing prank articles and changes made by other Wikipedia contributors, and were expecting to be cleaning up the aftermath for days afterwards.

Recalled pet food found to contain rat poison

Friday, March 23, 2007

In a press release earlier today, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, along with Dean of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Donald F. Smith, confirmed that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified Aminopterin as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods.

Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

Aminopterin is a drug used in chemotherapy for its immunosuppressive properties and, in some areas outside the US, as a rat poison. Earlier reports stated that wheat gluten was a factor being investigated, and officials now state that the toxin would have come from Chinese wheat used in the pet food, where it is used for pest control. Investigators will not say that this is the only contaminant found in the recalled food, but knowing the identity of the toxin should assist veterinarians treating affected animals.

The Food Laboratory tested samples of cat food received from a toxicologist at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University. The samples were found to contain the rodenticide at levels of at least 40 parts per million.

Commissioner Hooker stated, “We are pleased that the expertise of our New York State Food Laboratory was able to contribute to identifying the agent that caused numerous illnesses and deaths in dogs and cats across the nation.”

The press release suggests Aminopterin, a derivative of folic acid, can cause cancer and birth defects in humans and can cause kidney damage in dogs and cats. Aminopterin is not permitted for use in the United States.

The New York State Food Laboratory is part of the Federal Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) and as such, is capable of running a number of unique poison/toxin tests on food, including the test that identified Aminopterin.

A Short Guide To Laptops &Amp; Laptop Bags

By Mark Thomas Walters

Laptop computers have come a long way in a short time. Even though they are a relatively recent invention, they can now be seen everywhere you go, and frequently outsell desktop computers. Their small size, portability and convenience being the main reasons for their success.

If you are a laptop owner, or you are considering buying one, then you might find the below facts and advice interesting reading…

– Alan Kay, a Xerox engineer, is credited with coming up with the idea of a laptop computer in the late 60s. Ahead of his time, it was not until 1973 that the first prototype was build by IBM. In the mid 70s, IBM opened up laptops to consumers with their 1500 series. While these computers were not particularly small and lacked basic features, they showed that there was a market for the product.

– Laptops these days have features that the original makers could only have dreamed of. With such a wide range of good laptops to choose from, anyone purchasing one has to carefully consider the intended use. Everything from the size of the screen to the number of USB ports should be taken into account.

– For those using them for more basic tasks like checking emails and surfing the web, there is probably no reason they cannot go for cheaper, simpler models since virtually all laptops perform these tasks. For those who intend to use their computers for more intensive uses such a multitasking and gaming, a mid to high range laptop will be needed.

– With their components being so small and tightly packed together, they cannot be easily upgraded and changed as desktop computers either. While companies like HP and Dell offer many customization options on purchase, remember that any changes will likely be difficult and expensive after you have received the laptop.

– By getting a wireless / mobile broadband card, or plugging in your gprs enabled phone, you can access the Internet on your laptop from wherever you happen to be. There is no need to play around with cables and routers, you just open up your web browser and off you go.

– While the first thing many people look at is the bags appearance, it has important functions that need to be considered. Most important is the protection the laptop bag offers from sudden drops, moisture and other possible hazards. Other important features are ease of access and the number of compartments. People carry a lot of things nowadays. The bag needs to have enough easy-to-access compartments to carry all the gear needed.

– Those who need to keep their hands free usually opt for backpack laptop bags that keep the laptop secure in the bag while offering various compartments and other features depending on the bag. Those looking to save on money and space tend to go for laptop sleeves. These are just simple covers that may not have any pockets at all, but which protect the laptop from sudden jolts or the elements.

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.

Wikinews interviews candidate for New York City mayor Vitaly Filipchenko

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

In early May, Wikinews extended an invitation to Vitaly Filipchenko, an independent candidate in the 2021 New York City mayoral election, set to take place November 2nd, alongside other candidates. Filipchenko answered some questions about his policies and campaign during a phone interview.

Filipchenko, registered on the New York City Campaign Finance Board as Vitaly A. Filipchenko, is the first Russian candidate for New York City mayor, being born in Tomsk, Siberia in 1973, according to news agency Sputnik. He has since naturalised as a United States citizen. According to the web site, Filipchenko has been educated in road construction and maintenance and owns a moving services company; he describes himself on his web site as a “small business owner”. On his web site’s platform page, he says that “[m]y English may not be perfect – but my platform is.”

Incumbent Democrat mayor Bill de Blasio, who won re-election in the 2017 New York City mayoral election by 66.5%, cannot run for a third term under term limits. As of April 28, 22 candidates are currently running, the majority of whom are also Democrats. Ahead of the June Democratic primary for New York City mayor, a poll conducted May 23 and 24 by WPIX and Emerson College of 12 Democratic candidates with a margin of error of 3.2 per cent has former commissioner for the New York City Department of Sanitation Kathryn Garcia and Borough President of Brooklyn Eric Adams leading with 21.1% and 20.1%, respectively.

Yeast Infection Relief 5 Natural Yeast Infection Remedies You Can Try At Home

By Virginia Yeats

If you’ve ever suffered from the stinging, itching and burning, then you know that seeking yeast infection relief is a priority for women with these infections. Let’s face it, having a yeast infection can really put a damper on one’s day not to mention that it can be downright painful!

Fortunately, there are quite a few treatments that you can use to find relief from the itching and pain of yeast infections. There are a few at-home treatments you might want to try that will both help with immediate relief as well as help avoid further infections in the future. Here are 5 natural yeast infection remedies that you can try to soothe your symptoms:

1. Yogurt has beneficial bacteria that can help fight off the cause of yeast infections – Candida albicans. What happens during Easter infection is that the Candida albicans grows to rapidly, the bacteria in yogurt can help eradicate them. While this treatment can be effective, it can also be rather messy. What you want to do is get some plain yogurt and a tampon, then insert a tampon and leave it in for a few hours. Keep repeating this until your yeast infection clears up.

2. Garlic is another thing you can use for yeast infection relief. It has antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. You can use it in one of two ways. You can apply topically, although you might not want to do this in sensitive areas as it may sting a bit or you can simply try eating more garlic in your diet. This will help you fight off the yeast infection from the inside out and continuing to eat a lot of garlic will help ensure you do not get infections in the future.

3. Take a bath or douche with apple cider vinegar. This will restore the acid, alkali balance and make the environment not so pleasant for the yeast infection to grow in.

4. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will also help to relieve a yeast infection. The water will help your body to flush out excess toxins as well as help to even out the sugar you are ingesting throughout the day – yeast infections thrive on sugar so you should avoid eating it as much as possible too.

5. Tight clothing only helps make the area more humid, which the Candida albicans love so you want to be sure to wear loose clothing at all times and also make sure that your underwear is 100% cotton. Making it a habit to wear cotton underwear and loose clothes will help to stop reoccurring yeast infections.

There are also quite a few medications you can use for effective yeast infection relief. If you have a yeast infection, you might consult your doctor to find out what type of medication works best. Once your doctor has diagnosed that you do, indeed, have a yeast infection you will know for sure what the symptoms are and can work out which treatments, be they pharmaceutical or natural, work best for you.
